Autacoids Derived From Membrane Phospholipids: Prostaglandins And Leukortienes
Dr. Cemil GÖÇMENa
aFarmakoloji AD, Çukurova Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ADANA Prostaglandins and leukotrienes are two distinct families of autacoids derived from membrane phospholipids have been identified as "eicosanoids". These agents are formed from arachidonic acid mobilised or released from phospholipids. Cyclooxygenases and lipoxygenases mediate the biosynthesis of prostaglandins and leukotrienes from arachidonic acid. The eicosanoids have been detected in almost every tissue and body fluid. These lipids play a role in a number physiological and pathological processes including inflammation, smooth muscle tone, hemostasis, trombosis, renal function, uterine function, endocrine, central nerve system and gastrointestinal secretion. Some agonists of prostaglandins and synthese inhibitors of leukotrienes or receptor antagonists are used in the treatment. The nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agents have therapeutic effect to blockade of the formation of eicosanoids. Keywords: Prostaglandins, leukotrienes, autacoids, cyclooxygenases and lipoxygenasesTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2005, 1(1):1-9
