Seratonin
Dr. Hülya GÜLTEKİNa
aFarmakoloji AD, Erciyes Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, KAYSERİ Serotonin [5-hidroxitriptamin (5-HT)] widely exists in the nature including plants, vertebrates, invertebrates. 5-HT is synthesized from the essential amino acid tryptophan in serotonergic nerve terminals and all cells except thrombocyts. Its effect is ended mainly by neuronal re-uptake in serotonergic synapse and partly by non-neuronal re-uptake, diffusion, metabolition. Serotonin, mainly exists in enterochromaffin cells and thrombocyts, has relatively simple chemical structure but complex pharmacological features. The functions of serotonin are control of appetite, sleep, memory and learning, behavior, cardiovascular function, endocrine regulation, and mood. Peripherally, serotonin plays a major role in platelet homeostasis, and motility of the GI tract. The numerous pharmacological and physiological effects of serotonin is achieved by extent and various distribution of its receptors. Seven distinct families (5-HT1?5-HT7) and its subpopulations at least 14 receptors have been cloned so far. Although serotonin is not used as a drug, serotonergic receptor agonists and antagonists, serotonin releasers, neuronal re-uptake inhibitors modulate serotonergic functions. Keywords: Serotonin, receptor, agonist, antagonistTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2005, 1(1):45-54
